I guess my thought was that, without some deep knowledge and/or searching of MS' KB articles, the user who sees "updates are available" and clicks "update now" is no less unsafe from unintended consequences than the one that just allows auto-updates.

My preference here comes from running a change-controlled production environment.. occasionally I run across a Microsoft update that has unintended consequences. You also occasionally run into Microsoft "Updates" like some of the Windows Live software or Windows Search that are actually add-on software that you may or may not want. For the home user that might not do updates frequently enough.. I'd rather see automatic updates than nothing. Your mileage may vary..

What's the difference between auto-applied updates and the user automatically applying them when the computer says they're available?

Hi Keith.. thanks for your comment!

You're absolutely correct in your assessment - my past experience with Symantec was very similar to yours. With this latest version Symantec seems to have taken care of the speed issues.. and it seems to be much faster than McAfee was. There's still some bloat to the software - once it comes up you'll notice that it makes a lot of decisions for itself about turning on firewall, browser toolbars and the like. Power users will certainly want to spend some time to turn those things off.

I still really like AVG.. some don't. I'm glad to see this alternative available for those that want it.

I was a Chief Information Officer and dumped Symantec. We had Symantec's AntiVirus Corporate Edition - It took over & conflicted with everything! Ever since Symantec merged with Veritas thay have gone down hill. We were a gold level support customer. I spent hours on the phone, being transferred from one person to another, answering the same questions over & over. The software did things they didn't tell you about, forget about self help info & then try uninstalling it. It took me 3 months to completely purge all of it's crap from our servers & PC's registry! I switch to Microsoft Forefront Protection Suite. P.S. Symantec's products for home PC's, bring them to their knees. Not to mention with every sneaky auto-upgrade they add more crap and take control of more processes. Also a nightmare to uninstall!!

I have a Dell Mini 9 (Since rep, aced with the Mini 10). I love it and as you mentioned never feel it to be underpowered for the tasks suggested above. That said the advice I give to all my friends asking about my netbook is this . . . Do not buy anything smaller than a 10" netbook. My 9" has a keyboard that is too small to use easily and hurts the user experience. 10" netbooks generally have a 92% full keyboard and are much easier to type on.

Also worth keeping this info in mind while shopping. http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/17/laptop-reliability-survey-asus-and-toshiba-win-hp-fails/

I'll chime in for Ubuntu here as well. It's got a great online application repository that makes it drop dead simple to add applications without knowing about packages and command line tools.
